Artist Statement REVISED.

My work was sparked initially with a fascination of architecture. It is an interest I’ve had since childhood. I am a very tactile person. This desire for texture led me to begin looking at architecture and relating it to Russian Constructivism. I began looking at interlocking form and structure. Combined with personal struggles of being an emotional person that lives in an anti-male emotion culture and unrest with the ideological inequality of men and women, I make work exploring these ideas in juxtaposition with a study of architectural structures and human structures and the conflicts created.
My images sometimes evolve into installations. The elements involved in these installations make use of motion sensors, lights, video and sound to encourage interaction and immersion. These elements are sculptural in nature; large and small structures, anthropomorphic and rigid and explore the creation of space. The compositions presented are part of the larger study; the combination of engineered structures and human structures, architectural phenomenology, the study of how people react and interact with structures.
Each installation space has an image as an initial visual reference point. These images frequently speak to Dali or Magritte in nature and are intended to further push the environment of an alternate reality. A place where the issues presented are done so in a way that cannot be ignored and must be considered. The images reference the stiff architectural structure and the flowing human structure, but never directly. When one sees a problem or the potential for a problem the brain must resolve it. Photographs don’t allot this type of resolution when a question is involved and that forces the viewer to make their own conclusion about this issue presented. This type of persistence and reliability of a viewer trying to break down the meaning of intestines in a Victorian-esque image is exactly the obsession that fuels my work. The intestines are a cue; given to push a unique sensation that can trigger a unique experience. I want my images to be connected with emotions, a personal feeling for each viewer; because the viewer is bringing their own understanding to the image, structures and space, this data informs their answer to the questions that I have presented.
By creating their own narrative with cues of conflict, space, structure, and image, viewers can better understand the meaning personally and further meditate on my work. The meaning then becomes the product of their own interpretation and further yet the viewer shares as much with the space as the space shares with the viewer.

Project Proposal

This project is a study of phenomenology and more specifically architectural phenomenology; the study of conscious experience and that of sensory properties as applied to structures and images.

The work is about creating a world the viewer can have an experience in. That enables me to freely create and not be bound by the physical rational world. I want to make my viewers work for the conceptual. This desire will translate into 10 images and 5 events (sometimes including images) with full immersion in an installation space pushing the viewer out of their reality, into my own. The events and stand-alone images will be in conversation with one another, perhaps allowing the viewer to create a narrative. The elements involved in these installations will be technological and sculptural in nature. The events will involve and require all sensory abilities. I want my viewers to not just see an image, but to feel it. My images should resonate, not just in the sound projected or the sculpture presented but in the thoughts of the viewer as they gradually allow themselves to be absorbed.

Fresh Ideas

From my artist statement:
"The viewer has to engage with the image in order to appreciate it and fully enjoy it. By creating their own narrative, viewers can better understand the meaning personally and further meditate on my work. The meaning then becomes the product of their own interpretation and further yet the viewer shares as much with the image as the image shares with the viewer."
I am beginning to think a lot about the viewer experience, particularly my viewer's experience. I want to really manipulate feelings and thoughts. I feel like that began to happen with some of my works last year. The ones that were most successful were the ones least explained. So while I will continue to hide and guard things about my images, I am choosing now to add elements to further guide my viewer to the conclusion I want. Elements like sound and sculpture. This leads me to phenomenology and more specifically architectural phenomenology; the study of conscious experience and that of sensory properties as applied to structures. So now not only will my viewers be responsible for unpacking an image, but they will have to work through that image in conjunction with an architectural space.

PS: That is the most aesthetically pleasing urinal I have ever seen.

I have decided...

I don't like the idea that anything is implied or inherent when it comes to my art or how I make my art. Whether I am influenced or not, I don't want to know it.

Why does it seem so hard for us to be like Dadaists?
Appreciate the old, but leave it in the past.

Questions:

I want to know some things about you,

When you sleep, what do you dream about?
What is absurd and obscure around you?
In your own words, describe what surrealism means to you.
When I speak to you, what do I leave with you?

Summer update based on lack of updates.

How about summer, huh people?! Busy busy times. Still shooting weddings.

I did a shoot for POET which is the largest Ethanol producer in the world. So that was cool. A few are on facebook. All you design geeks should check out poet.com. I would love to whisper sweet nothings into the ear of that designer.

I bought a website! Yes indeed. It'll be posted on here when it is all polished up. The web designer is supposed to deliver tonight before midnight. *crosses fingers*

About to do a big time north mid-west shoot, just needing to find the time.

Beginning to consider schools for my Masters in Fine Arts. Hmmmmm. Any ideas? Before you suggest, think 'mountains'.

Above is a cellphone picture from the inside of the studio. Its in an old railroad station, totally groovy. Its taken with a cell phone which I have been doing a lot of lately. (CORY!)

Hope all is well with you fine folks.

Human emotion.

I was shooting this weekend for a piece for my "Fears" body of work. I was taking photographs in a manner in which I could capture people without them knowing. I got what I needed, but this image in particular stole my focus.
I stared to think about human emotion and how we regulate it ourselves and how we try to regulate others. Obviously there are gender implications to the above statement. Males should be strong and emotionless, women should be weak and full of uncontrollable emotion.

These things were in mind when I first saw this image upon my initial edit. A male and female, presumably romantically involved, shopping together. The male holding his own bag while the female holds hers. I feel like this image holds true emotion. Happiness. Both sexes happy. the male isn't dragging because he is shopping, as the female isn't loathing shopping without a girlfriend. It seems as this image breaks a few stereotypes about sexes. More specifically as they apply to shopping I suppose. But none the less it was nice to see.

TL;DR? The only question, is the emotion only real because they are unaware of the camera, would the dynamic change if they were aware?

Faint memories.

As I go on throughout my life, I can feel my memories leaving me. Nothing is really as clear as it used to be. Thoughts become fogged, ideas lose their relevance.

Thinking about this concept makes me sad. It is discouraging to know someday we will forget something we really valued. But at the same time that faintness of mind is what makes a memory beautiful I suppose. Easily made, easily lost.

Perhaps this is the reason I decided to spend my entire education and subsequently my entire life capturing and preserving things I see and value. Perhaps I emotionally can't deal with the concept of forgetting. Or perhaps I just want forgetting to cease to exist.

Trying to critically analyze why I do things is hard because I feel that photography comes naturally for me. So this must mean that it is my natural tendency to fear the loss, because I want to capture and preserve the would-be lost.

Productive day.

Productive day. Completed two pieces. Gathered supplies for another two.
This is one of two photographs I took today for a diptych for my 'Fears' body of work. This is not the color that will be used per se. At least I don't think it is.
I've been working with color recently trying to achieve a certain ascetic that I can't describe. It is close cross processing. It kind of only exists in my head. Which is a nice place for it to hangout.
This and the other image were taken in a private building I was not supposed to be in. I was wearing this mask and other awkward things that were making people uncomfortable. But I found that but just talking to them, saying hello, defused the situation and they ignored me.
Lately I have realized that If there is something you want, and you persevere to get it, you probably will. I feel that persistence is rewarded and determination is essential.
These are things I am trying to apply to my everyday life.

Lazy already.

I planned to do an update yester/to-day but I got preoccupied drinking a delicious Midwesten tour of micro-brewed beer. Wouldn't it be funny if this turned into a beer blog?

These are my favorites of the weekend. KC originals lovingly sandwiched between Iowa favorites. Gain Belt wins the weekend though.
